Jeric opened his eyes to total darkness. Someone had cuffed his hands over his head and then suspended him from the ceiling so that his toes brushed the dirt floor, but the pain digging into his wrists was nothing compared to the deep throbbing ache in his leg where Kyrinne had stabbed him.

Godsdamnit, that woman.

He was surprised she’d had it in her.

Although, when he remembered the look on her face, it seemed she was surprised she’d had it in her too.

Jeric growled in a fury and jerked his body against his restraints, but the chains only rattled and set his body swinging. Strain pulled through his arms, setting his wound on fire, and Jeric clenched his teeth against the pain.

Stovich had lied. He’d never meant to send Jeric men. He’d just been biding his godsdamned time, waiting for Jeric’s return. Waiting so that his daughter could get close enough—and she would, because Jeric was a rutting idiot—and end the Angevin line right in the privacy of Jeric’s bedchamber. Kyrinne might not have cooperated with her father had Jeric given her what she’d wanted.

He had to hand it to Stovich: It was the quickest takeover Jeric had ever witnessed, and judging by the deep quiet surrounding him, there hadn’t been much of a fight.

But where was Imari? And Braddok? Gods, if Stovich so much as put a scratch on either of them…

Voices sounded beyond his cell. Jeric strained to listen, but the sound was too muffled. He counted two speakers. No, three. One had a tone that struck Jeric oddly, though he couldn’t place it.

Metal jangled, the door opened, and light spilled inside. A man’s thick silhouette filled the doorframe, and Jeric blinked, straining against the bright intrusion.

“I finally leashed a dog,” said the silhouette.

Suddenly, the voice clicked: It was Breveran.

What in the rutting hells was Brevera doing here?

The figure stepped into the cell, and two Corinthian guards trailed behind—rutting traitors. They carried a lantern, which illuminated the Breveran’s face and the mark tattooed at the corner of his right eye.

Godsdamnit all to hells.

It was Kormand Vystane.

Jeric hadn’t seen the Breveran king since he was a young adolescent, but he’d never forgotten. One didn’t forget a person like Kormand. He was a beast of a man, all scars and rough skin. He looked like a gray, dressed in his pile of furs and leather, and a single sword hung from his left hip.

Jeric had previously suspected Kormand of being the Sol Velorian leader, offering amnesty in exchange for allegiance, working with them to weaken Corinth. Of course, that was before Imari, before he’d realized it had been his own rutting sister who’d been in league with Bahdra.

So what in the five rutting hells was Kormand doing here now?

And what had he done with Imari?

But Jeric didn’t ask those questions. That would reveal far more about Jeric’s priorities than it would ever reveal about Kormand’s.

Kormand murmured something to the other two, who took position just outside the door but left the lantern.

And Kormand approached like a bear stalking its prey.
